Tenterden town, and the two neighbourhoods that sit with it

Tenterden itself sits on a ridge of firmer, sandier ground above the surrounding Wealden clay, which is exactly why the town grew here: better drainage, better building ground, and a natural stopping point on the old drove roads down from the Weald to Romney Marsh. Working out from the centre:

• The High Street: one of the widest and best-preserved market-town high streets in Kent, Georgian and Victorian frontages, weatherboarding and tile-hanging, the 1792 Town Hall at its heart. This is the historic core, and most of it sits inside the Tenterden conservation area.
• St Michaels: the village-turned-suburb immediately west of the town on the Ashford road, with its own church and a genuinely separate identity even though it now reads as part of Tenterden. Mixed housing stock, more room for larger garden hedges than the tighter High Street plots.
• Smallhythe: a small hamlet south of the town on the old course of the River Rother, once a working shipyard when the river was tidal this far inland. Smallhythe Place, Ellen Terry's Tudor house, is here, now run by the National Trust. Quiet, rural, mostly older field-boundary hedging.

The Weald villages

Out beyond the ridge, the ground drops into heavy Wealden clay, orchard and hop country, oast houses, and the kind of hedged field boundaries that have marked out this landscape for centuries. I cover:

• Rolvenden: a handsome village 2 miles south of Tenterden, on the Kent & East Sussex Railway line. Its own conservation area covers the historic centre around the church and the old smithy.
• Rolvenden Layne: the smaller hamlet just south of Rolvenden proper, more scattered rural plots and longer field-hedge runs.
• Biddenden: a well-known Wealden village with its own timber-framed high street and vineyard country around it, and its own conservation area.
• Sandhurst: straddling the Kent/East Sussex border south of Tenterden, low-lying and on some of the heaviest clay I work, drainage matters here more than almost anywhere else on the round.
• Wittersham: up on the Isle of Oxney, technically an island in the historic Rother marshland, orchard and farmland character with scattered hedged plots.
• High Halden: on the Weald side of Tenterden towards Ashford, a mix of village core and outlying farmhouses.

The Tenterden conservation area

Tenterden's conservation area (Ashford Borough Council reference CA-43, designated 10 October 1996) covers the historic High Street and the streets immediately around it, the town's Georgian and Victorian core. Any tree or hedge stem over 75mm diameter at 1.5m inside the CA boundary needs six weeks' written notice to Ashford Borough Council before pruning, under section 211 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. Several of the villages I cover, Rolvenden and Biddenden among them, have their own separately designated conservation areas with the same notice rule. Full CA rules explainer.
